Deanna’s Top 6 Saddle Care & Maintenance Tips

  1. 1. Give your saddle a quick wipe after every ride. Use a slightly damp, clean cloth to lift sweat and surface dirt before it dries. This simple habit stops grime building up and keeps the leather supple.
  2. 2. Do a deeper clean once a week. Use a pH-balanced saddle soap or leather cleaner with a soft sponge, following the grain of the leather. Avoid soaking the leather, and always wipe away any excess product.
  3. 3. Condition little and often. After cleaning, apply a small amount of good-quality leather conditioner with a cloth, paying attention to areas that flex the most. Let it soak in and gently buff off any excess so the leather never feels sticky.
  4. 4. Store your saddle cool, dry and supported. Keep it on a well-shaped saddle rack in a ventilated tack room away from direct heat or damp. A breathable cover helps protect from dust without trapping moisture.
  5. 5. Keep an eye on fit as your horse changes shape. Run your hand under the panels, watch how the saddle sits and moves in walk, trot and canter, and notice any new white hairs or sore areas. If anything looks uneven or your horse feels uncomfortable, don’t ignore it.
  6. 6. Call a professional saddle fitter when things don’t feel right. If your horse’s behaviour, performance or back muscle changes, or it’s been more than 6–12 months since the last check, it’s time to book a visit. A qualified fitter can spot issues early, adjust your saddle safely and give you peace of mind.
